Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Qtest Mobile App Port
Contest for Qt and KDE applications

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Welcome to the Qtest Mobile App Port! As developers of applications using Qt, you already know how great it is to work with - but how about on mobile platforms, such as Symbian and MeeGo? How would you like to take that step you have been wanting to take, but not been able to justify: Take your application from the desktop and bring it into the hand-held world via the Ovi store.
Let this contest be the justification, with the possibility of a new phone or even 10,000 euros waiting at the end.

Dates:
The contest starts on 20th of December, 2010, and runs till 28th of February. The 31st of December is important for you if you wish to take part in the Early Bird competition. If you do no win, you will still take part in the main competition, and will be allowed to continue your work and submit new versions to the Ovi Store. The 28th of February is the deadline for taking part in the main competition.

Developer Sprint: There will be a sponsored developer sprint organized together with the KDE e.V. during the competition. The travel and stay can be paid for if you do not have the budget yourself. Further details will be made public at a later time, and all participants will be notified of this information via email.

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Judging and prizes:
The Qtest Mobile App Port is evaluated by a panel of judges which will be announced in the next few days. The jury will pic 5 winners at 31th of December as the early bird winners. Every winner gets a free N900 phone. The main competition first prize is EUR 10,000, which will be awarded to the application which the judges find to be the best ported application. The second to sixth price will be another 5 N900 phones.

And, finally: Everybody who takes part in the competition will be awarded a gift bag, with a T-shirt and other merchandise.

Eligibility:

To be able to take part in the contest, the ported application must be submitted for Ovi Store signing by one of the two deadlines:
- Early bird entries must be submitted by December 31st
- Standard entries must be submitted by February 28th

You also have to submit your application to the "Mobile Contest" category on Qt-Apps.org or MeeGo-Central.org

You can submit your application to the Ovi Store as many times as you wish during the competition. This allows you to get feedback from the public on your software. It´s possible to submit new or existing KDE/Qt applications

So have fun and good luck everybody!

UPDATE:

Contest deadline extended
Several developers approached me and asked for more time to port their applications.
So we extend the deadline of the contest to 15. of April. Everybody has one more month to port a KDE or Qt application to Symbian or MeeGo.
Remember that you can win 10.000,- so please consider to make your KDE or Qt application ready for mobile.

You find more informatiuon in the original contest announcement:
http://blog.karlitschek.de/2010/12/qtest-mobile-app-port-contest-launched.html

Please make sure that you also provide binaries for you applications. This makes is a lot easier for the jury to test you application.

Have fun and good luck.

Cheers
Frank

 My app didn't make it!

Hi Though my BabyGender didn't make it to the list, Iam happy for the winners. Baby Gender was my 1st Qt App! I hadn't even heard of Qt till a few months back so I didn't expect to make to the list but Iam happy to note that the app has about 500 downloads on Ovistore and has been useful to lot of common people.
ONE thing that puzzles me is how come the app got less than 50% score despite '0' vote?

What's about qml applications? Now Ovi Store doesn't accept that..

Excuse me, but QML wasn't allowed at first (because entries were supposed to be published at Ovi store). This is a game changer, my application didn't receive positive feedback regarding the interface because I didn't write it in QML, and even though I'll do what I can to polish the current Qt interface now, but still I can't possibly learn QML now and rewrite the application before the deadline. I am not saying the you should further delay the contest's deadline, rather I am saying that previously disallowed stuff shouldn't get suddenly allowed out of the blue. Right?

Hmm. QML was never excluded from my side. We have in fact no technical requirements or limitation for this contest at all. The only rule is that you have to use Qt.
I have no idea why Nokia excludes QML from Ovi. Can you send me a link where I can see this rule?

To publish Qt apps to Ovi store, you must use the smart installer (http://www.forum.nokia.com/Distribute/Packaging_and_signing.xhtml#article1_a) which downloads the version of Qt that you declare dependency on.

The only version of Qt the smart installer supports right now is 4.6 (http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Nokia_Smart_Installer_for_Symbian#Packages_distributed_by_Smart_Installer) which doesn't include QML.

I think, the reason that Qt 4.7 applications (in other words QML apps) aren't allowed is that the Ovi store team need to test Qt 4.7 extensively first, just like they did with 4.6.

It's not a big deal that publishing at Ovi store later became optional (in fact, it's a helpful thing) but allowing QML recently meant that apps not using QML are disadvantaged because we all know about the great features included in QML...

so is there any change necessary

Thats all fine for this contest. I suggest to move you application to a category which is only visible on Qt-Prop.org after the contest.

Hi everybody. We extended the deadline once more to the 15th of April. So everybody has a bit more time to finish or polish his/her application.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers
Frank

few days ago I read this post about postponed date, so I went ahead to port my application (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=121173) to maemo N900. But while registering on Ovi I noticed with great regret, that a VAT is needed even registering as "personal". Here, in Italy, as I know, to get own "partita iva" in not effortles: a lot of bureaucracy, time consuming, money and some blood :). So I hope there will be another contest in near future.
Good luck to everyone.

Marco
