public api

public api

By Frank
Published: Aug 13 2007

Today I finished a beta of our public api. You can integrate content from our websites into your website or you can to fetch the newest content and show and download it from your desktop applications.

Please note that this is still a beta version. So things may change in the future. At the moment there are only functions for content browsing and download. I will extend this in the future, of course. :-)

I use a REST inspired webservice interface. I think it should be relatively easy to use.

You can get the documentation from api.opendesktop.org or from any other website. (api.kde-look.org, api.gnome-look.org, ...)

What do you think?

Cheers
Frank

 Not exactly REST

Well, it's not exactly the REST style a REST guru may propose, but it looks very easy to use.

Very nice!

Good I shearching for this option years ago, so I'm was very suprised. But after loging in only what can I see for
'http://api.opendesktop.org/V1/GET/28165/'
is
'failed content not found'.
But this content exsist on kde-look
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Crystal+Monitor?content=28165

What is wrong?

Greetings,

 Slow?

Hi, I'm trying to write a Screenlet that shows you the latest additions, but it seems that the api shows entries way later than the website...

Hi,

cool idea.

The api has a cachetime of 2 hours to reduce the database load. So it is possible that the newest entries show up 2 hours later.

Do you think this is a problem?

Cheers
Frank

Well,it kind of defeats the purpose if the latest addition my screenlet shows are 2 hours older than the real latest additions...
Is there no other load-friendly way?

oh, btw: may I add a option to download Screenlets that sound and look interesting (I plan on implementing screenshots) or is this considered as traffic-stealing?

Hi,

ups. I noticed that the actual cachetime was 6 hours. I changed the maximal cachetime to 1 hour.

I hope this is O.K. for your application. :-)

Cheers
Frank

How about a third service, that only shows the 10 latest additions to a category. However this service will be updated every 10 minutes?

Sounds like exactly what I want :>

Oh, btw: could we get a list of Category-IDs and their corresponding names? (like: 101=Metacity Themes)

isn´t this exactly what http://frank:password@api.opendesktop.org/V1/LIST/1/new/1 does? O.K. The cachetime is 1 hour and not 10 minutes. Do you think 1 hour is too long?

We have this already. Please check:
http://frank:password@api.opendesktop.org/V1/CATEGORIES

 Request

I see that the XML response contains the URL for the preview pic, but its for the BIG preview. Its possible to put the URL for the thumbnail preview, please?

I'm currently doing some hacks with Python and was needing this URL, as downloading the full preview is a waste of time.

Thanks!

 Problem

by sventhef on: Mar 14 2008

As Massimiliano mentioned before, getting a list of content still returns "Internal Error. Exception id:1239532561". It doesn't even return XML. Everything else works fine.
Will this be fixed soon?

All in all this API is a very nice feature.

Sven
