How to theme transparency in GTK2 menus?

Artwork - Sep 15 2011
Question:Some background info: I'm making a Gtk theme based on Doom 3's UI.

I've run into a problem. I want the menu to look kind of like the attached picture.
That has transparency in a few places, and I don't know how to do that. If I leave transparent places in the image then it fills them with the background window colour. So I'm hoping that someone knows how to do this, or if not, I'm hoping someone has another idea for the menus. Thank you for reading this. :)

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback, guys, but this question is dead now, as GTK2 is fading away to GTK3.

If anyone would like to know, I did finish the theme, without transparent menus. It can be found here: http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/Doom3?content=144201

How to theme transparency in GTK2 menus?

Answer:Use GIMP and the free form selection tool (or standard or circle select if they are more appropriate.)

Select the main color for that section and then under layer select Transparency >> Color To Alpha then you will also get the option to set the transparency level.

 Thanks, but that doesn't work...

I already have the image transparent, but I was wanting the GTK theme to let it work. It fills up the transparent space with the "base" colour.

AFAIK, there's no easy way to do what you want.
You'll most likely have to find/write/change a theme engine which would support ARGB translucency (which will only work in composited environment (e.g. compiz)) or XShape, which will have jagged edges, but will work even without compositing.
I don't know of any pixmap-based engine with these abilities.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not working on this theme any more (finished it without transparency), and have updated the question as well.
