Chico State students forming group to boost democracyLike many, it was in disbelief that they watched footage of the planes hitting New York City's twin towers, black smoke billowing from the skyscrapers, and Powder Blue 10s for sale their eventual collapse."It was like you're watching TV, and it really couldn't be happening," recalled McClymont, 20, now a student at Chico State University. But it did. And five years later, he and Allwardt are bent on making sure it doesn't happen again. Both of the Chico State juniors recently spent two weeks in Israel, learning about terrorism and the threat it poses to democracies.McClymont and Allwardt were two of 46 students from across the nation chosen for the program, and were among the 39 who opted to travel to Israel in late July despite the Israel Hezbollah conflict. The students stayed in Tel Aviv, and studied at Tel Aviv University with terrorism experts, professors, political leaders, intelligence and military officials, as well as diplomats from Israel, Jordan, India, Turkey and the United States. While the fighting kept them away from Israel's northern border, the students were able to travel in other areas of the country.Allwardt, 19, said it was enlightening to be in a place that deals with acts of terror on a near daily basis, something that was a foreign concept prior to the trip."I couldn't even grasp that thought, Powder Blue 10s being an American citizen," he said. Now back in Chico, McClymont and Allwardt, who are friends and graduates of Mercy High School in Red Bluff, have started a student organization at Chico State called Students Defending Democracy.Their hope is to discuss three main beliefs that are integral to their cause. The first is that terrorism is never justifiable. Secondly, democracies have the right to defend themselves. And lastly, they want to dispel the adage that "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."For their first event, on the fifth anniversary of 9/11, they are inviting other students to a discussion on terrorism. It will be followed by a free screening of "United 93," the film based on the fourth Sept. 11 jordan 10 Powder Blue hijacked plane that crash landed in Pennsylvania after its passengers fought to gain control of the jetliner. today in the Bell Memorial Union at Chico State. Both students have no doubt there are terrorists living in the United States, but said they think the country is safer now than before 9/11.Still, Allwardt said it is critical that Americans don't become complacent about protecting themselves. To do that, they should always remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001.Font ResizeReturn to TopWe welcome reader feedback! Learn more about our new commenting system. Thanks.'Vampire Academy' stars talk story's jump to filmBased on the best selling young adult book series by Richelle Mead, the film, opening Friday, stars Lucy Fry, who plays Lissa, a vampire of royal lineage, and Zoey Deutch, who plays half vampire Rose, who's bonded to protect her. They attend the Vampire Academy, where there's a hierarchy among students and cliques like any other high school; the difference is that in the supernatural world, you sometimes have to fight to survive.
