The transparency isn't possible with metacity.

There's a package called "fusion-icon" that will allow you to switch between metacity and emerald.

I installed pretty much everything including the xfonts. how i installed them was by creating the .fonts folder in the home directory. cliff notes version, I was not able access the xfonts. how did you do it?

I use size eight, though the setting doesn't affect the font size for these pixel fonts here.

The window border didn't seem to work. I'm new so please forgive my ignorance but could I have wrong GTK version? How can I check?

You'll have to use the emerald theme for the borders. You may need to install the emerald package.
